Hoglet Give Miles the Mouse a Ride!My name is Hoglet the mouse riding with me is Miles from KidsTravelFun.com

Welcome to the TravelingBikers.com Kids Page! We call it Little Piglets Playpen because those big Harley-Davidson bikes are sometimes called "Hogs" and, well, since we are kids, "Piglets" just seemed to fit!

On this page, I want to talk about the fun and important things kids should know about:

  • Motorcycles (two wheels) - a motorcycle can also be called a motorbike or just bike.
  • Trikes (three wheels) - a trike can also be called a three-wheeler and usually look like a motorcycle with three wheels and a big rear end!
  • and ATVs (four wheels) an ATV can also be called a quad (kwawd) or four-wheeler.

    A Piglet and His Bike...it's a beautiful thing!PiGLeT SaFeTy

Riding a motorcycle takes lots of skill and, even though I am not old enough to ride on the street, I work hard to prove to Mom and Dad that I am very careful. Motorcycles go very fast and it is very easy to get hurt. That is why your mom, dad or riding teacher should be there while you're learning. Someday, I'll be old enough to take a bike out onto the road and Mom and Dad are teaching me the things I need to know.

Here are some of the lessons they've taught me:

    BEING AROUND BIKES

Ouch!Hands Off: I like the real shiny pipes on motorcycles. I always want to touch them, but Dad told me to never do this. I told him that my hands were all clean and I would try not to make fingerprints, but he told me that the motorcycle engine and exhaust may be extremely hot even after a short ten-minute ride and I might get a very bad burn. Well, that makes sense to me - DON'T TOUCH!
Have an Adult Around: I have learned never to go near a bike without Mom, Dad or another grown-up. I am alot smaller than the bike and if it falls over, I could get hurt.

Protect Yourself with the Right Gear!RIDING

Dress Properly: I used to laugh at my Mom and Dad when they would put on those leather pants, crazy glasses and other funny clothes until I learned from Mom that they did it to be safe. A motorcycle rider must be well protected by wearing a helmet, eye protection, long-sleeved shirt or jacket, gloves, sturdy pants, and boots or shoes that cover the ankles - that goes for kids, too!
Hold On: When I get to ride with a grown up on a big motorcycle, I must hold onto the driver's waist and never let go. I also must pay attention to the driver and do as I am told.

AND, WHEN YOU'RE OLD ENOUGH TO DRIVE...

    Stay Alert!
Other Drivers on the Road: No matter how big your motorcycle is, even the smallest cars and trucks will be bigger, so always pay attention to the other drivers. Remember, they have seatbelts and airbags - you don't!

It's a lot of fun riding a motorcycle, trike or quad, but there is also a lot to learn. Once I get a little older and can show Mom and Dad that I have learned what I need to know to ride safely, I will be able to leave the yard on a bigger bike. Until then, it will be up to me to practice with Mom and Dad and have fun!

Do you have a story to tell about motorcycles, a picture of you or a ride you have been on? If so, will you write and tell me about it? It's really easy. Just ask your parents to help you!
